TRAILER: THE PERSONAL STORY OF DBT

I made a vow at age 18 – and the vow was that I would get out of hell and that once I got out of hell I would go back to hell and get other people out.

Marsha Linehan, PhD
Developer of Dialectical Behavior Therapy

In June of 2011 Marsha Linehan, PhD gathered an audience of family, friends and colleagues to reveal that at the age of 18 she had been institutionalized due to self-harming and suicidal behaviors, likely as a result of Borderline Personality Disorder. This was the first time she shared her life’s story with the world. The place where she made this landmark presentation was the Institute of Living in Hartford Connecticut – the exact same Institution she had been admitted to as a teenager.

This is the true story of a young girl who, after spending over two years as a patient in a mental institution, went on to develop Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

DBT is now recognized as one of the most successful treatments in the world for Borderline Personality Disorder and suicidal behaviors.  DBT has also been shown to be effective in treating other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders.

In this video Dr. Linehan describes what her life was like before she was admitted to the Institute, during her stay there, and after she was discharged. Throughout the presentation she talks about how those lived experiences helped her to understand the pain and suffering of acute mental illness and subsequently to the development of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

For the first time this intimate and highly informative portrait of one of the most important figures in the field of mental health is now available for viewing.
