Some of the most enduring reminders of a severe mental illness such as borderline personality disorder are not the invisible emotional pain people with BPD experience. Rather it’s the visible scars from the self harm they may inflict on themselves to distract them from their pain.

That can cause a problem for those folks: their pain may subside over time, but the scars never will. They’ll always bring back memories of the deep distress people with BPD go through. Even when they get better.

But recently a woman from Leeds, England came up with a creative solution to that problem. She founded a not-for-profit organization that raises money to pay for tattoos that transform those ugly markings into something beautiful.
